South Plainfield Middle School honored America’s veterans with their annual Veteran’s Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 6th. Many local government and school officials attended in addition to several members of the Police Department, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad. The honored guests were several members of South Plainfield VFW Memorial Post 6763 who received numerous standing ovations from the students and staff assembled. Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th of November to coincide with the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Armistice Day, established to remember those who served in World War I, was formally changed to Veterans Day in 1954 and pays tribute to all of America’s veterans.

On November 1st, our middle school classes enjoyed the celebration of the Day of the Dead in their Spanish classes, a tradition where loved ones are remembered. This was the culmination of having created masks, ornamental paper and flowers, and viewing of educational videos and/or snippets of the movie Coco as part of their cultural lessons on the tradition of this holiday.
Ms. Rendon and Ms. Salazar re-enacted a presentation of how altars are created in Latin America. They placed cempasuchiles (marigolds), velas (candles), comida (food), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos (pictures) on the altar. On November 1st students created academic work explaining the holiday through use of their newly acquired knowledge of verbs, nouns, and adjectives.

In honor of Suicide Prevention Month, the students at South Plainfield Middle School completed a “Chalk the Walk” activity! Nearly the entire student body participated in the event where they were encouraged to use chalk to write or draw a positive affirmation on the Lake Street side of the campus sidewalk. The students enjoyed being a potential “light” in someone’s dark day as well as spending a little time outside! Remember we all can use someone to talk to. If that is you, please call or text 988 to contact a counselor immediately 24 hours 7 days a week.

In Ms. Calderone’s honors grade 7 science class, students worked with different materials to create a 3D model of an atom. Students constructed their models for an element of their choosing from the periodic table. Group members decided on design and materials together.

South Plainfield Middle School remembered the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, with a courtyard ceremony on the 23rd anniversary of that terrible day. The ceremony was enhanced by the overwhelming turnout of first responders from South Plainfield and local Veterans. The 9/11 monument in the courtyard was the center of the ceremony as students lowered the flags to half-staff and placed wreaths in front of the monument in honor of the victims and heroes lost on that day. Student Council President Jeremiah Saint Louis used the monument bell to ring out alarm code 5-5-5-5 which is used by the FDNY to announce a line of duty death. This was followed by a moment of silence, the playing of Taps by Lucia Matias and Kiarah Duncanson, and a recording of Amazing Grace performed by the FDNY Pipes and Drums. State Senator Patrick Diegnan and Town Councilman Derryk White each addressed the students and guests. The student body is to be commended for their outstanding display of respect and reverence during the entire ceremony. The following students also took part in the assembly:
Monument Flags: Matt Droge and Nick Riccardo, Luke Richkus and Mason Rizk, Joseph Currao and Mason McConville
Wreaths: Mikayla Zampella, Mark McConville, Donte Danise, Alexis Dean, Abigail Fego
National Anthem: Addison Kurzawa, Jayla May, Lianna Canarte, Danielle Richter, Santiago Matias, Blaise Bailes, Jake Butrico
