On Saturday, March 23rd, CJMEA hosted its annual Honors Band Festival at East Brunswick High School. Students have been working for six weeks on three pieces to be performed. The students in the band have not played together prior to the event. That day, they worked for five hours and then put on an excellent concert.
South Plainfield Middle School was one of 37 Central New Jersey Schools to send students. The Middle School students who participated were: Anvi Dobhal on Flute, Jason Miller on Clarinet, Justin Zubieta on Alto Sax, Apurva Kansara on Trumpet, Molly Van Wyk on Horn, and Nathaniel Rapelye on Percussion. Congrats to all for being great representatives of our school and community.
The South Plainfield Music Department hosted their Second Annual Mega Band Day at the South Plainfield Middle School. This event has all of the band students in the district from fourth through twelfth grade. Overall, there were 318 students. The goal of the day is to foster community between the band students in the different grades. Thank you to our music teachers, Mr. Haughwout from the High School, Mr. Veiss from the Middle School, Mr. Tweed at Grant and Riley Schools, Mr. Reo from Kennedy, Ms. Blair from Franklin, and Mrs. Haughwout from Roosevelt.
Last week, the South Plainfield Middle School took the opportunity to celebrate self love during the week of Valentine’s Day. Miss. Jordan lead the school through a week of activities and events to promote the idea of self-love throughout the school.
The South Plainfield Middle School would like to acknowledge the retirement of our beloved head custodian, Freddy Gapinski. After 12 years, the last two here at SPMS, he has turned in his keys for more relaxing days. The staff and students will really miss you, Mr. Freddy.
The South Plainfield School District has been closely monitoring the weather forecast for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 13, 2024. According to the latest predictions, rain is expected to start this evening, transitioning into snow between 5am-6am. Heavy snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour are expected until 11 a.m., leading to a total accumulation of 5-8 inches. Unfortunately, this coincides with our morning commute, posing hazardous driving conditions. As a result, the South Plainfield School District will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, February 13, 2024 to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.
Please be advised, all sporting events and practices are being rescheduled, and coaches will be reaching out to individual team members with further updates.

Today the South Plainfield staff and students wore red to celebrate National Red Day to show their support for the awareness of heart disease.
On Saturday, January 27, 600 students from Central New Jersey went to Community Middle School to audition for the CJMEA Intermediate Region Band. The competition was fierce, but the South Plainfield Middle School had three students pass the audition to make the ensemble. Diego Valdez-Mejia auditioned on Baritone Sax and made the Symphonic Band. Molly Van Wyk auditioned on the French horn and made the Wind Ensemble. Blake Greco made the percussion ensemble and achieved the highest score out of all who auditioned. Congrats to all!
We have been closely monitoring the weather forecast throughout the day and while what will happen is still unknown at this time, the recent forecast is calling for a range of 3-5 inches of accumulated snow for South Plainfield and the surrounding areas tomorrow. As of this evening the snow is predicted to begin at 5:00 a.m. and continue throughout the school day, making for a hazardous afternoon commute. As a result of the accumulated snow predictions along with a concern with staffing within our transportation department the South Plainfield School District will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 19, 2024.
All district activities, including sporting events and practices, are cancelled for the day.

In anticipation of predicted icy road conditions tomorrow morning, Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the South Plainfield School District will operate on a delayed opening schedule to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. The delayed opening will allow time for salting of Borough roads and prepare the schools for the students’ arrival.

A very happy holiday from the middle school staff and students. Mr. Veiss, Ms. Haughwout and some of our band students went through the halls to spread some holiday cheer.
Ms. Bednar’s 8th grade art classes painted murals. Each student painted a piece of the picture in their own style. Then, they pasted them together like completing a puzzle. The collaborative paintings are inspired by the artists Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Rousseau.
On December 14, the South Plainfield Middle School Music Department presented our annual Winter Concert. All groups had excellent performances and Mr. Veiss, Ms. LiVecchi, and Ms. Haughwout are proud of the hard work of the students.
Students in Ms. Kousoulis’s Math 7 Class enjoyed teaching Adding and Subtracting Linear Expressions to their classmates as a review.
The South Plainfield Middle School Student Council and grade advisors organized this year's Volleyball Tournament. Students had a blast working together to try and win the double elimination tournament. Many teachers participated on teams and helped make the night run smoothly.
Today at the South Plainfield Middle School, students in Mr. Oliver's class baked three different kinds of cookies to share with the staff and each other.
Today is World Mental Health Day! Students and staff at the South Plainfield Middle School wore Green in solidarity. We stand united with those impacted by behavioral health challenges.
Over the weekend, Ms. Rendon and Ms. Salazar along with 20+ students from SPMS volunteered at the South Plainfield National Heritage Celebration. The students read poems, sang and danced and assisted with set up and cleanup.
