Students in 7th and 8th grade at SPMS took part in an after-school pickle ball tournament organized by physical education teachers, Natalie Harrell and Cheryl Hughes. At the end of the event, two students - Jeremiah Saint Louis & Isabella Rotondo - earned bragging rights and prizes when they were named first place winners!

On December 23rd, middle school students (and staff!) participated in a battle of the classes event to kick off winter break and celebrate the holidays. “Reindeer Games” included team names like Comet, Cupid, Blitzen and Rudolph and different winter-themed events, such as Build a Snowman, Sleigh Ride and Hungry Hungry Reindeer! We even had a visit from Santa, who did not bring gifts, but certainly was part of the fun. A great event for a great school community. Looking forward to seeing our fun, energetic, unique students again soon. Enjoy the rest of your break and see you in 2025!

The National Junior Honor Society at South Plainfield Middle School wanted to say "thank you" this holiday season to our volunteer firefighters. The group created a card, which they designed collaboratively, signed and delivered themselves!

To celebrate Thanksgiving and practice gratitude, our middle school students created a “gratitude chain” by sharing things that they are grateful for. The links were then joined together to create a series of chains to decorate our halls. We are thankful for our wonderful students! Great job!

South Plainfield Middle School honored America’s veterans with their annual Veteran’s Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 6th. Many local government and school officials attended in addition to several members of the Police Department, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad. The honored guests were several members of South Plainfield VFW Memorial Post 6763 who received numerous standing ovations from the students and staff assembled. Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th of November to coincide with the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Armistice Day, established to remember those who served in World War I, was formally changed to Veterans Day in 1954 and pays tribute to all of America’s veterans.

On November 1st, our middle school classes enjoyed the celebration of the Day of the Dead in their Spanish classes, a tradition where loved ones are remembered. This was the culmination of having created masks, ornamental paper and flowers, and viewing of educational videos and/or snippets of the movie Coco as part of their cultural lessons on the tradition of this holiday. Ms. Rendon and Ms. Salazar re-enacted a presentation of how altars are created in Latin America. They placed cempasuchiles (marigolds), velas (candles), comida (food), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos (pictures) on the altar. On November 1st students created academic work explaining the holiday through use of their newly acquired knowledge of verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
