Students in Mrs. Malta's 8th grade math class use a hands-on, minds-on approach to the Pythagorean Theorem. Assembling 3- piece mini puzzles of right triangles, they practiced finding the missing side length using the matching equation. Math is so much fun!

For March Mindfulness, our middle school students participated in board games, Jenga, and yoga during lunches! This was a nice way to escape the busy cafeteria while we waited for warmer weather and outdoor space.

Shaan Ganapathy represented South Plainfield Middle School at the New Jersey State Chess Championship this past weekend. He participated in the Grade 6–9 Junior High section, competing in five rounds and his current USCF rating is at 875. Way to go, Shaan! We are so proud of his effort, focus, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament!

Ms. Di Bella's 7th grade ELA class participated in a mock trial. As a class, they read and annotated the short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. In the story, the narrator commits a crime. The students chose to be part of either the defense or the prosecution and prepared a presentation using text evidence to support their claims and overall argument. The students' goal was to successfully argue and ultimately persuade the jury (made of teachers) in their favor!

On Saturday, March 21, Six South Plainfield Middle School Students were selected and performed with the CJMEA Honors Band. They performed at Monroe High School with 200 of the best music students from 41 middle schools in Central New Jersey.

Students in Mrs. Cawley's 8th grade math class put their problem-solving skills to the test with a systems-of-equations scavenger hunt. Each clue described a real-world situation, and students had to define their own variables, write equations to model the scenario, and solve the system using the elimination method. Every correct solution led them to the next challenge, keeping them moving, thinking, and collaborating.
