Students who participated in Artists and Activists, researched the Lost Souls project about a corrupt judge in East Brunswick in 1818 who sold free Black people to slave owners in the south. Our SPMS students wanted to pay tribute to the original memorial quilt created by students in New Brunswick. Our quilt is meant to not only remember those who were sold in the slave ring, but all people of color who are affected by violence in their lives.

The Athlete of the Week: Joseph Oduro Boys’ Spring Track The Boys’ Spring Track team won both the Blue Division Relay and Blue Division Championship this season. This past week, two large jumps and two new school records led to two gold medals at the GMC Championships for the Brown University bound Senior Joseph Oduro. Joe has been an integral part of the success the Tigers have had this entire season. First, on Tuesday night at the Triple Jump, Joe leapt his way into South Plainfield History with a 47 foot, 4.5 inch jump. This attempt broke Joe’s previous school record as well as his closest competitor by over two feet. The distance also won the county gold for Joe in the Triple Jump for the second straight year. Joe now stands alone on top of the State Leaderboard with the best Triple Jump in New Jersey. Wednesday night was just as eventful. At the long jump, Joe saved his best leap for his last as the 23 foot, 1.5 inch distance claimed first and beat out the silver medalist by just one inch. Trailing going into the finals, Joe put together a great push to out jump the top two and move into first place. This attempt also broke the school record previously held by Deshai Smith. The Tigers and Joe look to compete in the Sectional Championships this coming week.

The Kennedy School 4th grade classes spent part of the day showing their appreciation to our school grounds and sprucing up the front of the entrance. The students placed new “Kennedy rocks” in the flower beds and moved some of the older ones to make the front look nicer. The students also cleaned up around the recess area and by the high school track.

The Athlete of the Week: Dylan Jefferys Golf The South Plainfield High School golf team had an outstanding season this year. Their season record was 17-2 with the only two losses coming from the division winning Edison Eagles. The Tigers also made it to the final day of the GMC tournament as a team. Junior Dylan Jefferys was the captain and leader of this great season. Dylan shot a best 3 over 36 and averaged just 4 over par for the season. He also was a top candidate for All White Division golfer this year, just behind Edison Eagles number one golfer. With the return of Dylan next year and no seniors graduating, South Plainfield is looking forward to another successful season, with eyes on a division title.

The Athlete of the Week: Nicole Swatko Softball (Pitcher/Designated Player) The South Plainfield Softball team is having a great run in their county tournament. This week they beat the tenth seed Colonia 10-3 in the first round to set up a third meeting with division winner Metuchen. The Lady Tigers won a tough 4-3 victory to advance to the semi-finals this coming Saturday. Freshman Nicole Swatko has been a major contributor to the success this season. Nicole picked up two wins in the county tournament while hitting over .400 on the week. She accumulated five hits for the week and had four runs scored. Nicole also has two homeruns and had six runs batted in (RBIs). In the quarterfinals against second seeded Metuchen, Nicole pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win.
