Riley School's Character Education
Good Morning Riley Rock Stars and Parents!
Today starts our journey into learning about character education.
Character education allows us to learn skills like Respect and Perseverance; we use these skills to be super learners and super friends! Our first trait for September is ..... RESPONSIBILITY!
Students that demonstrate characteristics of the monthly character trait will be nominated by their teacher to potentially be a Student of the Month. Students of the Month will be announced in our monthly slideshow, as well as announced by Mrs. Valarezo in her morning message.
If you have not already, please join our counseling google classroom to access documents for parents as well as social-emotional resources for students.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
We look forward to seeing all our students use their rock star powers to be superstar friends!

November's Character Trait is Gratitude!
Gratitude is one of many positive emotions. It's about focusing on what's good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have.
Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water, friends, family, even computer access.
December's Character Trait is Empathy!
Empathy is the ability to understand another person's condition from their perspective. We often hear about “putting ourselves in their shoes.” It is a key element of emotional intelligence and a skill that helps us build and maintain relationships.
Empathy is the base of tolerance and compassion and kindness.
January's Character Trait is Kindness!
Kindness at school looks like:
Holding the door open for someone Waving hello in the hallway Helping your friends
Kindness at home looks like: Helping your parents with chores Reading a story to someone in your house Using your manners
For the ENTIRE month of JANUARY we are going to have a KINDNESS BINGO CHALLENGE. Check out February's Presentation for January's Students of the Month!
February's Character Trait is building positive relationships and sharing!
March's Character Trait is Mindfulness!
March is here and so is our new character trait!
March is all about Mindfulness. Mindfulness is paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you're mindful, you're taking your time. You're focusing in a relaxed, easy way.
Throughout the month of March we will be exploring the topics of Read Across America Week, Mindfulness, Women's History Month, Deaf History Month and much more.

April's Character Trait is Trustworthiness.
April is here and so is our new character trait!
April is all about Trustworthiness. Being Trustworthy is being reliable or doing what you will say you will do. It is doing the right thing, even when it is not the easy choice.
When we can be trusted to be a good friend, tell the truth, and do kind things, we are considered trustworthy.
Throughout the month of April, we will be exploring the topics of Disabilities Awareness Month, Counseling Awareness Month, Springtime, Autism Awareness, Earth Day and much more!
May's Character Trait is Honesty!
Please click on link to the right Honesty Parent letter for a character letter regarding ways to improve this skill at home. Honesty at Riley School is about being truthful in what you say and in what you do. Honesty includes telling the truth (not lying), not hiding the truth (deceiving), and acting in a way that is morally right (not stealing, cheating). Honesty is important in how we all work together in society. We are working every day to teach our students to be kind humans as well as diligent learners.
