What is Special Education Eligibility and IEP?

Eligibility for Special Education and Related Services

After review of the evaluations conducted, a student will either be determined to be eligible for special education and related services or not eligible for special education and related services.  A student is "Eligible for Special Education and Related Services" when it is determined that the student has one or more of the following disabilities which adversely affects the student's educational performance resulting in the need for services.

  • Auditory Impairment 

  • Autism

  • Intellectual Disability (mild, moderate, and severe)

  • Communication Impairment

  • Emotional Regulation Impairment

  • Multiple Disabilities

  • Deaf/Blindness

  • Orthopedic Impairment

  • Other Health Impairment

  • Preschool Student with a Disability

  • Social Maladjustment

  • Specific Learning Disability

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Visual Impairment

 

What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?

An Individualized education program (IEP) is a written plan that sets forth a student’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance, measurable annual goals, and short-term objectives or benchmarks and describes an integrated, sequential program of individually designed instructional activities and related services necessary to achieve the stated goals and objectives. This plan shall establish the rationale for the student's educational placement, serve as the basis for program implementation, and comply with the mandates set forth by the Department of Education.
