School Counseling Services

School Counselors are dedicated professionals, committed to providing support services in the areas of academic, personal/social and career development. In keeping with the South Plainfield School District’s Mission Statement, it is our intent to address the needs of students at all developmental levels for the purpose of enhancing their educational experience in preparation for their post high school experiences.
Educational planning is one of the primary responsibilities of the School Counseling Department. Achieving strong grades in current courses is the first indicator of the level and kinds of courses students will take in the following year. When it is time to select courses, counselors will meet with students individually to discuss career goals, level of performance and areas of special interest. The student and his/her counselor will review teacher recommendations, academic achievement and state requirements for graduation, as well as the post-high school experience. Strong achievement in each course will assist students to prepare for future career goals and aspirations.
It is important that students discuss course selections with parents or guardians, while objectively considering selections, interests and career goals.

Student Assistance Program

The Student Assistance Program offers services to students who have been identified with problems and concerns relative to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and crisis/mental health issues, which create a barrier to student success. Through this program, the Student Assistance Counselor will facilitate in-service programs for faculty, students and parents, and act as a liaison between the school or family, and the drug and alcohol treatment system.
